Superman does a lot in his newest adventure. Archvillain Lex Luthor, determined to make the world safe for nuclear arms merchants, creates a new being to challenge the Man of Steel: the radiation-charged Nuclear Man. The two super-powered foes clash in an explosive screen extranvaganza that sees Superman save the Statue of Liberty, repulse a volcanic eruption of Mount Etna, rebuild the demolished Great Wall of China and perform many more spetactular feats.
It's such a shame to see the franchise reduced to this after the triumphs of the first two movies.<br/><br/>I own all four of the films on video, and the difference between the first and the last film is terrible. The first film looks fantastic, the effects are spot-on, and the music is possibly John Williams' finest score.<br/><br/>The last one however, uses awful superimposition techniques that make Superman look pasted on to the screen, and the music is a poor reproduction of the original themes.<br/><br/>As for the story, I think it could have been made into a good film. It wasn't, though. I know everyone has already pointed out the ridiculousness of the scene where Lacy Warfield (ugh - crap name) is taken into space, but what really got me is that when the Nuclear Man stopped being able to fly, she started to fall downwards. Not downwardsin towards Earth (which was behind here in the frame) but downwardsin towards the bottom of the screen. That's inexcusable really.<br/><br/>When I watch the first film now, I love every minute of it, and the 'Can You Read My Mind' scene chokes me up every time. The poor reconstruction of that in this film could ruin it if you didn't look at the credits.<br/><br/>If you've never seen this film, watch the first one again instead. You'll be reinforcing a dream, rather than compounding a nightmare.
Superman 4 has good ideas and good performances, but was ruined when the director cut 40 minutes from the film before release. Among other things, the denouement in which Nuclear Man defies Luthor and turns himself into a nuclear missile in order to spark World War III. In order to see what the film should have been, I suggest one seek out the DC Comic Adaptation. This film,Christopher Reeve's final performanceSuperman deserves to be restored for DVD. The reason for Superman using powers he has never had, was the result of unfinished effects. The great wall of China scene should have been finished by adding Superman fixing the wall at super speed, and finished with Superman sealing it with heat vision.
Superman IV works rather wella children's movie. It even has a line or two for adults – though not, one hastens to qualify, enough to actually warrant adult attendance. [25 July 1987, p.B1]
Again, this is simply writers ignoring physics for the sake of "good visuals".<br/><br/>7. An objectlargea building (i.e. the Statue of Liberty carried around by Nuclear Man and later Superman) could not be held up horizontally by only one small area a few feet wide on one of its ends. Such a huge amount of weight throughout the length of the building would cause too much stress along the unsupported areas and cause it to break apart.
